- Generally, these exploit a 50 year old telephone network operator issue. A recorded message will be played to the listener instead of the legitimate message of “Will you accept the 3rd party billing of long distance charges? Say ‘yes’ or press 1 on your touch tone phone”. The goal is to get you to unknowingly pay for a call on the premise of winning a prize or some other personalized recording.
- The Unsubscribe-Phone-Number or Phone-&-Hang-Up scam is usually sent by e-mail, fax, or recorded messages. The scammers are generally located outside of local legal jurisdictions, but they can bill your phone number a processing fee of around $4-$24 if you call the number.
Tip: Purchase a $100 throwaway pay-as-you-go phone for your job searches.
